A symmetric research position for the Evil Robots series and evilrobots.lol

One-line thesis: Institutional capture is a mechanism, not a party. The same three moves — take the institutions, take the language, lock the ratchet — recur across ideologies and across civilizations. The faction is the variable; the mechanism is the constant. Because the mechanism includes relabeling opposition, the left/right axis is itself a captured instrument — which is why the only honest detector judges by documented action and deviation-from-the-factual, never by the political coordinate a faction wears or assigns.

How to read this document (the discipline contract)

This is a position built to survive an adversarial reader. It binds itself to five rules. If a future draft breaks one of these, it has broken the thesis.

  1. Judge by action. Every claim about a faction is anchored to attested behavior — a named, dated, self-described program where possible — not to imputed motive or ideological vibe.
  2. One symmetric standard. Progressive, socialist, Christian-dominionist, Islamist, Hindu-nationalist, Leninist, and corporate factions get equal scrutiny and equal steel-manning. We do not stack the deck. Where one faction’s example is the most self-named and therefore the easiest to point at, we say so explicitly and compensate by giving the others equal documentary weight.
  3. No single-orchestrator conspiracy. The mechanism is emergent and imitated, not centrally directed. There is no committee running all the factions. We explicitly reject the LaRouche-style “British/Venetian system runs everything” over-extension (see the box at the end).
  4. Hedge every contested item in-text. Where a document’s status, an attribution, or a motive is disputed by serious scholars, the dispute appears in the sentence, not in a footnote.
  5. Flag the epistemic tier. Primary source vs. secondary; fact vs. position; self-named program vs. outside characterization — labeled inline.
  6. Name the avowed ideology, never the spectrum coordinate. Each faction is identified by what it calls itself — National Socialism, Fabian socialism, Marxism-Leninism, Christian dominionism, Hindutva — not by “left / right / far-right.” Those coordinates are the captured instrument (Move 2); they are the object of analysis here, never adopted as the document’s own voice.

The self-naming confession (read this first): One milieu — the postwar Western progressive and socialist student movement — supplies the most self-named version of Move 1. Dutschke literally branded it “the long march through the institutions.” A faction that names its own strategy is the easiest to point at, and a lazy writer would stop there and produce a polemic against that one milieu. We refuse that. Self-naming is a quirk of a slogan-loving culture, not evidence that faction is uniquely guilty. The Christian-dominionist, Islamist, Hindu-nationalist, Leninist, and corporate cases below are documented to the same standard — and several of the best-documented instances (Klemperer’s National Socialist Germany, Rákosi’s Stalinist Hungary) come from movements no one confuses with campus progressivism. We identify each faction by its avowed ideology and judge it by its actions, never by a left/right coordinate — because, as Move 2 shows, that coordinate is itself the thing being captured.

MOVE 1 — Capture the institutions

The slow march. Entryism, permeation, the patient build. Not the barricade — the personnel file.

The shared logic: durable power is not seized in a day; it is accreted by placing your people inside the bodies that confer legitimacy (universities, courts, agencies, media, professional guilds, local branches) and waiting. Below are the self-named or well-attested versions across ideologies and civilizations, weighted equally.

1a. Western progressive / New Left — “the long march through the institutions”

  • Attribution hedge (important). The phrase is ubiquitously misattributed to Antonio Gramsci. It is not his. Per the same source, “Evidence is lacking … that Dutschke was aware of Gramsci’s work at the time. 1b. The Fabian Society — “permeation” and “the inevitability of gradualness”

  • Self-named program (fact).   • The doctrine (fact).   • Why it belongs here: the Fabians are the cleanest non-revolutionary template — capture as a multi-decade advisory project. The mechanism does not require violence; it prefers committees.

1c. Christian dominionism — Reconstructionism and the Seven Mountains Mandate

  • Origin (fact). A 1975 origin story credits evangelicals Loren Cunningham (YWAM) and Bill Bright (Campus Crusade) with the “seven spheres” framework — family, religion, education, media, arts/entertainment, business, government. Cunningham himself did not go into politics; he saw the spheres as evangelism strategy.   • This is the structural twin of 1a/1b: seven institutions, captured one at a time, justified by an inevitabilist theology.

1d. Political Islam — the Muslim Brotherhood’s gradualism, and the contested “Explanatory Memorandum”

This is the single most contested item in the document. It is presented with the dispute foregrounded.

  • Well-attested gradualism (position/fact). The Brotherhood’s founding ethos is gradualist and institution-building (mosque, charity, professional syndicate, party) rather than purely insurrectionary — a genuine parallel to permeation. (Secondary, broadly accepted.)
  • The document (fact about the document; NOT a fact about the Brotherhood). An 18-page memo, “On the General Strategic Goal for the Group in North America,” drafted May 1991 by Mohamed Akram (Adlouni), was entered as Government Exhibit 003-0085 in U.S. v. Holy Land Foundation (the 2007–08 terror-financing trial).   • THE CAVEAT (do not omit, ever).   • How we use it: as a documented artifact of intent by one author, explicitly not as proof of a live, coordinated plan. The honest framing: “one man wrote down the capture playbook in 1991; a US court entered it as an exhibit; serious scholars dispute that it was ever the Brotherhood’s adopted strategy.” Anyone who drops the second half is doing propaganda, not analysis. 1e. Hindu nationalism — the RSS shakha network and Golwalkar’s cultural nationalism

  • The institutional engine (fact). The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS, founded 1925) built power through shakhas — daily local branches for physical training, cultural storytelling, and ideological formation.   • The explicit gradualism (position, sourced to RSS’s own framing).   • The ideology (fact, with attributed criticism). M.S. 1f. Leninist / state — the CCP United Front Work Department

  • The organ (fact).   • The scholarly framing (position). Scholar Jichang Lulu: united-front proxies “re-purpose democratic governance structures to serve as tools of extraterritorial influence.” — United Front Work Department — Wikipedia
  • Symmetry note: these are US-government and committee sources; they are interested parties in the US-China contest. We flag that and lean on the self-described function of united-front work (co-opt elites, mask affiliation), which the CCP states openly, rather than on the threat-inflation framing.

1g. Corporate — Stiglerian regulatory capture and the revolving door

  • The theory (fact, primary-adjacent).   • The mechanism (fact). The revolving door — staff cycling between regulator and regulated — is the personnel pathway of capture, the corporate analogue of “permeation.” — Regulatory capture — Wikipedia
  • Why this is the keystone of symmetry: capture here is explicitly non-ideological and emergent — no cabal, no manifesto, just incentive gradients producing the same institutional outcome. Stigler is the proof that the mechanism does not need a faction at all. It is the strongest evidence for the “emergent, not orchestrated” claim in the discipline contract.

MOVE 2 — Control the language

Relabel. Euphemize. Define the terms so that your frame feels like neutral common sense and opposition is pre-coded as illegitimate.

This is the deepest and most cross-cultural move, which is why the anchors below are deliberately non-Western and cross-ideological: an ancient Confucian, a National Socialist, a Soviet, a contemporary Leninist, and a novelist. The thesis: every durable faction engineers vocabulary so its worldview arrives disguised as reality itself. Whoever fixes the names fixes the boundaries of the thinkable.

2a. Confucius — 正名 zhèngmíng, the “rectification of names” (Analects 13.3)

  • The ur-text (primary, ~5th c. BC). Asked his first priority in governing, Confucius answers: the rectification of names.   • Why it leads Move 2: this is the oldest explicit statement that controlling names controls order. It is normally read as a prescription for honesty (make the word fit the thing). The capture inversion is the dark twin: make the thing fit the word — redefine “ruler,” “justice,” “violence,” “safety” so reality is forced to comply.

2b. Victor Klemperer — LTI: Lingua Tertii Imperii (the National-Socialist instance)

  • The work (primary witness, 1947).   • Why it is placed prominently: the single best-documented case of engineering a population’s vocabulary to engineer its thought is National Socialism’s — the Third Reich. It anchors Move 2 because it is the most thoroughly attested instance, and because it makes the thesis unmissable: a regime that named itself socialist ran the identical language-engineering playbook that self-described progressives, Leninists, and theocrats run. The mechanism does not track any left/right coordinate; that is the entire point. We name the regime by what it did and what it called itself, and decline to reduce it — or anyone else here — to a spot on an axis that Move 2 has already shown to be rigged.

2c. Soviet “wooden language” — langue de bois / novoyaz

  • The phenomenon (secondary/scholarly). Françoise Thom (La langue de bois, 1987; Eng.   • Function: not to persuade but to exhaust and pre-empt — a vocabulary in which dissent literally cannot be phrased crisply.

2d. The CCP — “discourse power” (话语权 huàyǔquán)

  • The doctrine (fact/position, contemporary). Huàyǔquán = the power to set the terms of debate so that one’s frame is “respected and recognized by others.” Per Nadège Rolland, the ability to “change the thoughts and behaviors of others in a nonviolent and noncoercive way.” It became a stated foreign-policy priority under Xi Jinping after 2012 (it was rare in Party discourse before).   • Why it matters: this is Move 2 stated openly as state strategy in the 21st century. It is not a critic’s accusation. The Party names the lever itself.

2e. Orwell’s Newspeak — the fictional distillation

  • Use: Orwell is the model, not evidence — the clean statement of what 2a–2d do in the world. Cite him as the lens, never as a source for a factual claim.

2f. The local dialect — relabeling opposition as “right” (and the thesis upgrade)

  • Position (explicitly flagged as the book’s argument, not a sourced fact). The modern Western move of coding all opposition as “right-wing” / “far-right” is one local instance of zhèngmíng and huàyǔquán, not a special evil. When a faction controls the naming, it can relabel a heretic, a whistleblower, or a centrist as the enemy-coded term, after which the label does the work that argument used to. This is precisely why the left/right axis cannot be the detector. The axis is inside the captured instrument. The only frame that survives the relabeling attack is one that asks: What did they actually do? How far does the claim deviate from the verifiable record? Action and deviation-from-fact are label-proof; political coordinates are not.

MOVE 3 — The one-way ratchet

The clicks only go one way. Gains lock in; the door that let you in closes behind you; dissent that was permitted yesterday is foreclosed today.

3a. Leninist democratic centralism — “freedom of discussion, unity of action”

  • The ratchet reading: in theory the “democratic” half balances the “centralist” half. In practice the discussion phase shrinks and the binding phase grows — each decision narrows the space for the next debate. The clicks accumulate toward the center and never release.

3b. Rákosi’s “salami tactics” (szalámitaktika) — the self-named slicer

  • Self-named program (fact). Hungarian Communist leader Mátyás Rákosi coined “salami tactics” in the late 1940s for slicing the opposition off “one slice at a time” — get the Independent Smallholders’ Party, the largest non-Communist party, to expel its own members bloc by bloc until only collaborators remained.   • Note the convergence with Move 2: the ratchet runs on the relabeling. “Fascist” was the blade. Control of the name is what let each slice fall.

3c. The “temporary” emergency power — surveillance authority that never sunsets (state, non-partisan)

  • The mechanism (fact). A statute written with a sunset — meant to lapse unless actively renewed — becomes permanent through serial reauthorization.   • The ratchet reading. The sunset is sold as the off-switch; in practice it is the renewal lever. The authority only widens or holds, never contracts, and the burden silently inverts: ending it now requires affirmative action against the inertia of the security state — exactly the rollback the ratchet is built to resist. Non-partisan by construction — it has been renewed under both parties.

3d. The digital-ID ratchet — voluntary enrollment that hardens into a precondition for life (state / tech)

3e. Religious-law escalation — Pakistan’s blasphemy statutes that only tighten

  • The mechanism (fact). Pakistan’s blasphemy provisions are a one-way legal ratchet. Section 295-C, criminalising derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad, was Blasphemy law in Pakistan (§295-C) — Wikipedia during General Zia-ul-Haq’s Islamisation program, carrying death or life; in 1991, following a Federal Shariat Court ruling, the penalty was amended to make death mandatory, removing the judge’s discretion.   • The ratchet reading. Each amendment narrowed the permissible and widened the punishable; none rolled back. The discretion a judge held in 1986 was gone by 1991. As in Move 2, the ratchet runs on the naming. Once “blasphemy” is fixed by statute the accusation does the work, and repeal is itself coded as blasphemy, which is the lock. We judge the statute’s documented behavior, not a faith.

3f. Tie to the series’ existing Ratchet thesis (generalized, faction-agnostic)

The Evil Robots series’ Book 2 (The Ratchet) already names this dynamic in the safety-infrastructure / control-grid domain: tools justified as protection accrete into a mechanism that only tightens. Generalize it: the ratchet is not a property of any one faction or any one domain. It is the third move of the universal mechanism — the reason captured institutions and captured language don’t decay back. Every faction that completes Moves 1 and 2 reaches for Move 3 to make the gains irreversible. The detector for a ratchet is the same action-test: can dissent that was legal/expressible last cycle still be expressed this cycle? If the answer is monotonically “less,” the ratchet is engaged — regardless of who is turning it.

What this is NOT — the rejected frame

We explicitly reject the single-grand-orchestrator conspiracy frame for every faction in this document.

The clearest cautionary example is Lyndon LaRouche’s “British/Venetian system,” which claims a single oligarchic “financial slime-mold” — relocated from Venice to London in the 17th century — secretly authors the world’s wars and crises. The mechanism documented here is emergent and imitated, not directed. The Fabians did not coordinate with the RSS. Wallnau did not coordinate with the UFWD. Rákosi did not coordinate with corporate lobbyists. They converged on the same three moves because the moves work — they are the local optimum for any group seeking durable, legitimacy-clothed power. That is a far stronger and far more defensible claim than a cabal, and it is the one the book must make. Convergent evolution, not a conspiracy.

The detector that falls out of all this

Because Move 2 captures the label-axis itself, no honest detector can run on political coordinates (“is this left or right?”). The relabeling attack defeats it by construction. The detector that survives asks only two label-proof questions, applied identically to every faction:

  1. Action: What did they do — what institutions did they take, what words did they redefine, what dissent did they foreclose? (Named, dated, sourced.)
  2. Deviation-from-fact: How far does their stated frame sit from the verifiable record?

A faction scores as “capturing” when it runs the three moves, whatever flag it flies. That is the symmetric standard, and it is the spine of the book’s credibility.

They meet at Move 2: controlling the names is exactly why the conventional left/right axis cannot be the detector — the axis is inside the captured instrument. The Three-Axis Model names what left/right masks — grounding: whether a faction answers to a law above itself (higher law) or is its own final authority (will-to-power). A faction that runs all three moves is, by construction, sitting on the will-to-power pole. The moves are simply what self-authorizing power does to make itself permanent.
