Institutional Archetype
THE LETTER WITH AN ENDOWMENT — The Future of Life Institute wrote the most famous document of the AI-risk movement, the March 2023 call to pause frontier training, and then turned out to be one of the best-funded organizations in the field: a nonprofit whose annual contributions went from under half a million dollars to $670 million in a single year. It funds researchers, fellowships and policy work aimed at slowing or stopping frontier AI. The file is open because the brake has a balance sheet.
Mandate & Origin
An AI, biotechnology and nuclear-risk nonprofit; founded and chaired by Max Tegmark, an MIT professor (FLI). Early money came from Elon Musk, whose “$10 million investment” in January 2015 funded its first research grants (CBS News).
Funding & Backers
Its Form 990 filings show contributions of $481,825 in 2020 and $670,530,459 in 2021, with total assets of $537.2 million at the end of 2021 against $2.4 million a year earlier (ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer, EIN 47-1052538). The 2021 gift has been reported as Vitalik Buterin’s donation of Shiba Inu tokens; FLI’s technical fellowships are named “The Vitalik Buterin PhD Fellowship in AI Existential Safety” (FLI).
Position in the Apparatus
- The letter (March 22, 2023). “We call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4” (FLI). It became the reference point for the “pause” camp; see AI worldview camps.
- The money behind the camp. With assets in the hundreds of millions, FLI funds AI-existential-safety PhD fellowships and grants, and works on policy. The wider funding map is in The EA to AI-Safety Funding Pipeline.
Actions & Leadership Choices
CONDUCT: ADVOCACY — FUNDS AND LOBBIES FOR THE BRAKE. No wrongdoing is alleged. The structural point is scale: the best-known call to slow AI comes from an organization that, after one crypto donation, can outspend most of the field it is trying to slow, and that pays for the next generation of researchers who will be asked whether to slow it.
Reach Assessment
Institutional: Grant-maker, fellowship funder and policy voice. Memetic: The pause letter, with over 31,000 signatures on its page, is the AI-risk movement’s best-known artifact.
